Framing Analysis
The U.S. Department of the Interior has directed annual reductions of 1.25 million acre-feet in Colorado River water deliveries to Arizona, California, and Nevada for the next two years after the seven basin states did not reach a full agreement. The cuts build on a May voluntary state agreement and coincide with the October expiration of current allocation rules amid a 26-year drought. Mexico has separately committed to a 250,000 acre-foot reduction.
