Twenty individuals transferred from the United States arrived in Liberia on August 20, 2026, at Roberts International Airport. Liberia has agreed to accept up to 1,200 such third-country nationals over one year under a diplomatic arrangement reached in September 2025. The Liberian government described the program as humanitarian, stated that participants are free to leave or seek asylum, and confirmed receipt of U.S. support for migration management without direct compensation.

Campaigning for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections begins August 19 2026 under rules set by the Independent National Electoral Commission. President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, which has held power since 2015, is the party’s candidate; he did not attend the August 18 peace accord signing attended by opposition candidates Peter Obi, Omoyele Sowore and Adewole Adebayo.
